The University of Oviedo is a public institution of higher education and research in the Principality of Asturias. With over 400 years of history, it offers a full range of undergraduate degrees adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) in all branches of knowledge and postgraduate degree programs in collaboration with national and international universities and more than 250 companies. The University of Oviedo has become one of the most outstanding Spanish Universities regarding teaching and research quality, with an increasingly relevant international position.
The University of Oviedo has seven campuses located in the central area of Asturias, in the cities of Oviedo, Gijón and Mieres. Although dispersed, the campus model is structured around teaching and research specialization, sustainability and creating social spaces that enable university coexistence.
The Campus of Mieres was created towards the end of the 20th Century in an initiative to reactivate the economy of the mining regions of Asturias. It is specialized in Earth and Environmental Engineering and is emplaced in a building that resembles the derricks of the mines that had been the driving force of the economy of the region.
Thanks to the substantial investment of the funds for the Restructuration of Coal Mining, the University has built an academic complex that provides all the necessary equipment, including a building of scientific-technical services, a university residence hall and a sports center.
Accommodation will be at the Residence Hall in the University Campus and lectures and tutorials will be held in the Research Building, just beside the Residence Hall.
Mieres council is located in the south central part of the Asturias’ central zone. Measures a total of 146,03 km2 (91 square miles) and has a population of 45.000 citizens. Max altitude is 1160 mts (3806 feet) and min 160 mts (525 feet). You can find more information about Mieres here.
